Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be

O poema´é mencionado em episódio envolvendo Nelson Mandela durante seu período de prisão. Segundo ele a força trasmitida pelo poema foi determinante em sua luta para seguir vivo e vitorioso.
